Marama Callan

Christchurch, New Zealand

Your role at Trineo:
Lead Software Engineer

Three words that describe you:
Vibrant, Creative and Eccentric (I crowdsourced that question)

Favorite binge-worthy show?
Favourite? Black Mirror, but it is better digested slowly. Binge-worthy? Tends to be things I have not seen before.

Fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
The first time my hair was dyed, it was green and I was 3 years old.

What do you do in your spare time?
I have so many hobbies and so many potential hobbies that I wish I had the time for. Some of the ones I enjoy are painting, sewing, baking, brewing ginger beer, random arts and crafts projects I decide upon and growing plants (strange varieties of fruit and veggies being my favourites). I also enjoy playing video, board and card games, devouring media while I do some of my hobbies and hosting social events.

What’s the last book you read?
I’m actually a recovering read-a-holic and went cold turkey on books a while back in favour of other things. But if anything were to pull me back it’d be Terry Pratchett.

What did you do professionally before joining Trineo?
Trineo is my first tech sector job. I have an eclectic background of experience but I am frequently finding ways unrelated past jobs have helped me in my current career.

Important moments, catalysts, turning points in your career?
I was fed up with the job I was in which led me to study again. I tried certificates in things I enjoyed and picked one I would enjoy both as a job and as a hobby to study further. Then I decided to shift cities, which led me to completing a Bachelor of ICT specialising in programming at ARA (then CPIT). These were some of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

How long have you been at Trineo?
4.5 years

What is your role at Trineo? What does a typical day look like?
My title is Lead Software Engineer, but that doesn’t really describe what I do. I wouldn’t recommend viewing my typical day as a spectator sport because it’s not particularly exciting from the outside, but certainly is challenging and rewarding from the inside. I get to solve problems both in and around code with a group of impressively smart people, resulting in some pretty neat systems which help a lot of people.

What’s your secret to achieving success in your role?
Curiosity. Tech is something which is always evolving. You simply can’t know everything there is; you have to constantly be learning. It can be an uncomfortable feeling, but embracing what you don’t know and reaching out for knowledge or help is vital.

What do you like most about working at Trineo?
Being treated like a person, not an expendable resource.

How would you describe our culture to candidates or other people who inquire?
At Trineo, people work hard but they also know how to have fun. Each new person brings some of their culture into the mix and you end up making friends with people you might not have in your everyday life, and it is great.

What does it take to be successful at a company like Trineo?
A lot more than any one person can understand or do. It’s about everyone doing their part and realising when they need help from others.

What career advice would you give to your younger self when you were starting out in your career?
Other than time travel secrets of companies to invest in? I’d tell myself to get into the tech sector sooner.
